I produced this trailer for “TAKING ROOT: The Vision of Wangari Maathai” for the nationally televised series Independent Lens on PBS, which is produced by the Independent Television Service (ITVS).
How does the simple act of planting trees lead to winning the Nobel Peace Prize? Ask Wangari Maathai of Kenya. In 1977, she suggested rural women plant trees to address problems stemming from a degraded environment. Under her leadership, their tree-planting grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, defend human rights and promote democracy, earning Maathai the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
TAKING ROOT: The Vision of Wangari Maathai premieres Tuesday, April 14 on INDEPENDENT LENS, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Terrence Howard, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, INDEPENDENT LENS is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide.
